there yesterday, gone today

Posted by littleindian on September 18, 2007. |

We have new neighbours, they moved in yesterday.

In the house opposite; a smallish chalet style bungalow, almost hidden
from view by many lovely matured cedars of lebanons and numerous evergreen shrubs.

It belonged to a retired gentleman, lived alone, loved his house, loved his trees
I would see him pottering around fixing this and mending that.
And on sunny days, he would go for a spin in a lovely cream
open top vintage jag, with a cheery wave to all.

Cedars

Then it was all silent, soon the house was up For Sale.
He had been to a party one evening, where he collapsed,
was rushed to the hospital with a heart attack, but he died.
Some distant relative inherited the house, and put it up for sale.

Having worked till late last night, I tried to catch up with sleep this morning,
kept dreaming hearing an annoying buzzing noise that wouldn’t go away.
I wake up to find, tree surgeons at work in the house opposite.
With a large mechanised shreddar in the driveway.

It’s gone
all that lovely dark greenery I was used to.
I can now clearly see the bungalow, and above a very grey sky.
Those trees had grown for years and years and years, till yesterday
not knowing the sale of house documents had also signed their death sentence.

We all are holding onto our dreams, our ambitions, our values, our ideals, our principles

  1. Maybe the trees were blocking the sunlight. Well they’ll certainly get their sunlight now – unfiltered and with less to catch the carbon. What’s wrong with people? Green is the most relaxing and peaceful colour.

How sad. What’s likely to replace those trees? Probably a fancy paved driveway to house a couple of huge cars.

  2. Thats sad..!! Puts the “Yelllow taxi song” to forefront….isn’t it…..right now we are not valuing all this….may be later…..anyways from the balcony of our house I see this tree branches coming in….finally my family has given way to my wish and this year they are not chopping…! Thank god for small mercies….back at home 🙂

  3. @ earthpal,
the mature cedars were mostly north and west aspect.
There were two on the south east aspect, so these probably did block some sun, but not all of them.

Earthie they were really lovely and elegant looking trees.
I feel really sad to see them gone.

  4. @ rulzbender, has the traveller truly returned?

    Remember dogmatix?
The tiny dog that became ferocious if anyone chopped trees.
I have to train Ruff to be like him.

  5. lol….yes traveller has truly returned ….( for sometime) till I mend my burnt pockets….I am still reeling under Europe being so expensive….!

Thats a good idea…Ruff will surely take the challenge….he he …!
    Tk care ~
